MATE - Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences
About
The legal predecessor of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) is the oldest regular agricultural higher education institution in Europe, which started its operation on July 1, 1797. Following the successful integration of the former Szent István University, Kaposvár University, Gyöngyös Campus of Eszterházy Károly University and Georgikon Faculty of University of Pannonia in 2021, MATE has become one of the largest and oldest agricultural-focused, multi-disciplinary tertiary education institutions in Europe, combining more than 200 years of tradition with the science and innovation today with a student body of over 13 000. Approximately 15% of the students are international, coming from over a hundred countries, and diversifying the community by it being multinational, multilingual, and multicultural. (Extensive mentor programs make student life at MATE even more inclusive.)
Higher education has recently been facing dramatically changing expectations in a rapidly changing environment worldwide, which have their impacts on the Hungarian higher education as well. Universities are expected to meet local and global needs, to excel in education, to encourage and nurture research, to develop partnerships with the industry and to foster innovation, which means existing for the public benefit in brief. Sustainability-focused learning and the integration of new technologies enhance the prestige.
With the foundation of MATE, our university has become part of the renewal of the complete Hungarian higher education. MATE's long-term objective is to be amongst the thirty best agricultural higher education universities in the world while being the flagship of Hungarian agricultural education. This commitment dovetails nicely with the past traditions of the Hungarian agriculture, presents opportunities of the Hungarian higher education, and it will also contribute to the economic development of the whole country.
As a dynamic institution, being aware of global issues, climate change, food security and sustainable development, MATE is committed to offer the students complex and market-oriented knowledge which is competitive anywhere in the world. Thus, we consider lessons learned from the most successful European universities, combine our methods with state-of-the-art solutions, and enhance our international integration, to design the best programmes for our students. Our university has campuses in Budapest, Gödöllő, Gyöngyös, Kaposvár and Keszthely, we offer constantly revised degree and training programmes on bachelor, master and PhD level, and invest significantly into making our institution competitive on the global front.
MATE boasts a unique architecture and infrastructure of its campuses as well as beautiful natural surroundings, being arboretums, botanical gardens, forests, lakes and parks, create a pleasant ambience and provide a conducive environment for our students.
